Claude is an AI assistant made by a company called Anthropic. You talk to it in ordinary language, typed or spoken, and it responds in ordinary language. It can read documents you give it, write text, analyse data, produce spreadsheets and presentations, search the web, work with your files, write and run code, and carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf when you set it up to do so.
That is the whole of it, and it is also almost nothing, because the same three sentences describe something you can use badly for two years or well within two weeks. The difference is not the software. The difference is whether you understand what is happening when you type.
Imagine hiring an unusually well-read graduate assistant on their first morning. They have read an extraordinary amount. They write clearly. They can summarise, analyse, draft, translate, code, and argue both sides of a case. But they have never met you. They do not know your company, your customers, or your house style. They have no memory of last week unless you leave notes. And when they do not know something, they will sometimes produce a confident, well-written, entirely fictional answer.
Every technique in this book exists to manage one of five facts:
Claude is not a database and not a search engine. It is a transformation engine for language and structured thought. Feed it good inputs and clear instructions and it produces good outputs.
