The potter's wheel and the furnace: where did matter come from?

A potter drops a formless lump of clay on a wheel; a minute later there is a vessel. Nothing was added, nothing taken away — only form entered. Four thousand miles away, a particle accelerator melts protons back into a formless soup that then cools into matter. The same shock: out of the formless, form.

Granted that something began, how did it become things? The Hiranyagarbha Sukta answers with the Golden Womb; physics answers with the first three minutes, when the universe froze out the recipe of all ordinary matter — three quarters hydrogen, one quarter helium.

Both agree on something strange: matter is not the beginning of the story. It is a late arrival.
